I'm getting this beauty right now on a customer's PC. What a headache. The same thing happens when trying to bring it into safe mode. An in-place upgrade is one resolution posted on the MS site.
That is what I would try first.
Nothing of value was on the system to instead of wasting time I just used a system restore.
I recently installed windows xp over the existing installation and it completely wiped the windows folder, including the drivers. not what I had planned. had to reinstall everything. it was almost the same as a format but all the documents were still in place.
I know what you're talking about. I had a system that would have had a similar result if I hadn't been careful with it. the Windows XP setup did not offer me a chance to repair the installation. It said that if I DID continue with the install using the default (\windows) folder that setup would remove certain files/folders first before installing. That's not what I would have wanted at all.
